![]() To the southeast of it runs the Ethiopian Trench, interspersed with young volcanoes, with no outflow (it belongs to the East African trench system ), which funnel-shaped to the northeast to the dry, hot Afar depression opens. In the lower southwest of the Caffa highlands, the plateau character is less pronounced than in the northern highlands (the actual “Abyssinia”) due to the strong relief. The edges of the highlands and the deep gullies of the rivers (Blue Nile, Omo, Tekkeze) are very steep. The high plateaus are criss-crossed by deep gorges, an aggravating factor for the development of the infrastructure. The predominant large forms are areas on which wide-span volcanic massifs are often placed. The highest point in the country is the Ras Dashen at 4,620 m above sea level.
